Society Economics: the natural way

From Thiruvannamalai

While I was having a usual chat with Sriram @ IISc, he mentioned about the new multiplex cinema malls coming up in Bangalore and the closing of old ones.

‘How can an average citizen watch a movie in Bangalore?’ he asked me. I wondered.

The low cost theatres are closing up and the new multiplex (which costs at least 5x times more) are coming up.

The corporate citizens might snip the gold class tickets. What about the rest?

On one side we bring economic growth and wealth creation but on the other side are we not creating another dark world?

In today’s busy world the mantra seems to be ‘me’, ‘me’, ‘me’ and ‘myself’ again. None seems to be bothered about the human sitting next to us.

When societies grow it expels the crowd who are not capable of living up to the levels of their life.
It is so natural.

Suppose, I land up at Brigades road in Bangalore and I feel hungry. Unless I have more than 100 bucks (at least) I can’t even dare to think of eating something there. So what do I do next? I move to a place where I can get some good food at a nominal rate. And so, what happens is the crowd who is able to pay more is pushing the crowd who is unable to do the same.

In near future we would broadly have two types of citizens. One the Platinum class and the rest the other class (whatever name you give it)

Today: Platinum credit card.
Tomorrow: Platinum society exists and even the entrance would be charged!

"I think, therefore I exist" (Rene Descartes) should be rephrased as

I pay, therefore I exist!

May be this is the ‘new normal’.
May be this is society’s metamorphism to fine tune its inhabitants.

[Thanks Sriram for the chat which made me think!]

From Macro

Today we were discussing about the obstacles that come across in life.

I try (or at least wish) to consider obstacles as the initial steps that we need in our life to reach somewhere we have never gone before.

For me, life is all about learning. Learning brings new insights and so life is vibrant. I prefer to see life in that way.

One of my friends put forward a totally different thought saying – ‘I think, god is making me prepared for the worst things that are yet to come’.

For my friend, it was about creating immunity!

May be god doesn’t want us to get scared of what is yet to come and so incubating us in a pseudo state before we enter the real danger zone in life.

May be we all are trying to be immune day by day by adapting to things in our life that we come across each day.

I think we can relate this to Life Cycle which is about the metamorphosis – pupal transformation into a butterfly – it needs time and patience for the larva to reach the state of beauty, to enjoy the nature. Though the pupa looks inactive from outside, the changes happening inside is enormous even if not visible.

Same way, at some point in life we might also feel that we are becoming inactive, or may be we are not getting what we ought to get. But may be we are just getting equipped from inside, though we don’t realize at that point in time.

I dream to fly
And I plan to succeed
Though I am prepared to fail

PS: Thanks for the word immune - It provoked my thoughts.

Sound of Silence

From SunSet

Every one of us believes that we all live in the ‘same’ world. Yes, we wake up when sun rises in the east and goes to bed when it doom into the sea at west.

Still, are we all on the same world?

I live in a world carved out of my own experiences. I see things in my own way. My possession is my knowledge. I gather it from the way I live life. The books I read, the movies I watch, the people I meet, the discussions I have, everything contributes to the becoming of me.

When something gets inside me, I think. The thoughts evolve. Initial thoughts could be at a pupa state where it just needs to be inside you and you need to protect and guard it. Once a thought gets matured, it can’t be enclosed inside any more; it just comes out as butterfly which just needs a fly, which are actions. Thoughts provoke actions.

My thoughts, perceptions, experiences mould my views. When we bring in some one to our world, we share. Sharing has its own limits. We just can’t share everything. We pick the things which we feel like sharing and leave the rest.

Can our world be shared fully? First of all is that something necessary?

We say ‘our’ world. But is it really ‘our’ world? For me, I think we interact on the same world. But do we live in the same world?

Though there are millions of human livings in the so called same world. They are just living in millions of different world created by them.

I am obsessed with the sound of silence in my world where there is nothing but me. The silence brings me back to my own world.

Something’s better unsaid. Something’s to be said. Something needs to be just understood.

I love my sound of silence in my own world!

Becoming Visionary

From Punchakary

Arun Nath asked me this How is it that you are planning to achieve this????”when I told him that I would like to become visionary.

The following is my reply to the same, which I felt I should share to get some comments.

Hope everyone knows an artist.

Artist is a descriptive term applied to a person who engages in an activity deemed to be an art. An artist also may be defined unofficially, as, "a person who expresses themselves through a medium". The word also is used in a qualitative sense of, a person creative in, innovative in, or adept at, an artistic practice.

Does he know when he is going to create something? I think he creates when he feels for it. He cannot go through a clear cut plan to create something; rather he would be interested in going through a plan to acquire the skills to enhance him to facilitate the process of creation.

An artist can only permit himself to go through and search for a real spark.

He would never know when or how a spark might happen – he can’t plan for it and according to me if he plans then he won’t be creating, but instead imitating (we can’t plan for something which we never see or experienced- it would just be a vision! He would be able to plan how to deliver a vision, but not to create a vision.)

But somewhere within him, he would feel that there is something which attracts him towards things and make him interested so that he needs to allow himself to learn. An artist might even take a nomadic nature.
I feel a visionary would be similar to an artist or poet in some aspects.

By extension, visionary came to mean also a person with a clear, distinctive and specific (in some details) vision of the future, usually connected with advances in technology or political arrangements. [If you ask any visionary, if he had created a plan for becoming a visionary, he would say ‘no’, I didn’t plan for getting this vision but rather I took a path which made me feel curious and the curiosity & interests brought me to a state which ignited my thoughts and provided me this vision. ] Other visionaries simply imagine what does not yet exist (but might be as visioning provides a glimpse of the future).

At this stage, I am trying to search and find any thing and everything that makes me feel excited. I just want to taste, but if you ask me will I ever finish tasting, I would say no clue. But if you ask me did you ever do something after tasting? I would be able to say a ‘yes’, though meager. I did introduce new concepts; I did publish, I did bring in changes on the things I worked on and I still feel the same.

For me to become visionary is an evolution which never ends. Others might throw stones or laugh at or may be respect, since we go away from the conventional way of doing things within a society. But that is what is natural of me which I just don’t feel to limit.

Have a look here - I felt it interesting, may be you all will feel the same.

From Nature

Everyone is unique. I believe it is a fact known to all.

Still rarely I see everyone act accordingly.

As Jim Collins said, we need to find the intersection of 3 circles. It would help us to find what we are born for, if we ask ourselves the following.

1. What I am I deeply passionate about?
2. What can I be the best in the world at?
3. What drives your economic engine?

Jim Collins was introduced to me by Dr. Ganesh Devaraj. Many thanks to him for letting me introduce to this concept.

Today, if you try to answer the above 3 questions, you might not have a quick answer. Most of us might feel that we don’t have anything to be best in the world at this point.

Yes, I too feel the same at this point.

It might be sounding awkward if I say that most of us don’t know ourselves.

Try asking some questions like why am I what I am now, what am I born for, what am I genetically encoded for , etc :

Are you getting some clarity in answering any of the above questions?
  • If yes, I think you might know yourself.
  • If answer is no, I am unable to get answers, I think it is high time you isolate yourself and start to think.
Life is always open, but limited. The early we realize, early we would start ‘living’ for what we are born for.

It is high time we need to ‘realize’ what we are born for. May be our life is meant to ‘search’ for an answer for the same.

Ajit told me the following yesterday. (Please have a look at the following image)

I’m ‘ok’, at least I am moving.

I see the light. It guides me. So, I follow it.

From Punchakary

‘Discipline is god’s gift to achieve what we wish for’ – I never believed in this.

I always trusted in chaos. It worked for me.

A structured life never gave me space to my thoughts. I felt, I would lose my freedom, happiness, everything I possess if I bring discipline into my life.

But, did I achieve anything what I wished for? Did I work in an organised manner towards achieving any target? I would need to say ‘No!’

I somehow got into a mode where ‘inertia’, played a heavy role. Changing the state of rest happened once in a blue moon - only when I had a great pull from inside. Else, it almost always ended in some talks, not in action.

I trusted this - Unless you have that kind of force from inside there is no point in doing things for the sake of doing

May be it is just escapism to avoid things which I never wanted to do ever in life. There are things which are essential, which we need to do to reach some destination. No shortcuts!

‘To read homer there is no shortcut’ – you will need to learn greek!

I am so interested in reading Homer, but I am never interested in learning greek for reading homer! – Sounds crazy?

Sometimes, I feel that I search for the essence and only the essence. I listen and analyse. Listening is easier than reading? Not for many, but for me.

I decided to learn ‘greek’ and then read homer. Who knows, I would get to know more things during the journey of learning greek which would be more interesting and fascinating that my dream of reading homer!

I decided; I decided to love discipline!

Him / Her

From Single

Life is not something which could be drawn by us. It just happens and we just try to be in pace with it.

Years might pass by, but hearts of few are left untouched. They stay same, for years and may be till they decease.

Few chose to remain separated, knowing or unknowing. When the time rings it bell, nature whispers 'let you be together'!

Feel your spirit which got attached to someone close to you. Realise your warm tenderness when you speak of him/her.

Give him/her a chance, knowingly. Let him/her glow and be a part of ecstasy on the ride for life.

Conception or Misconception

From Thiruvannamalai

Old Story: Ten in hundred identifies. Five in ten tries. Three in five understands. One in three realises and become the ‘One’.

I analyse. The results make me prejudiced.

Is there some who wins and some who lose in the game of life? Game of life!

Why am I so curious? Why do I wish to believe that there is much more in life than just some of these feelings, emotions, expressions, patterns, experiences?

What are we trying to achieve? Why most of us are behind money or power or any by products of the other two?

Is it our life’s purpose to learn to see the world in different ways as age walks up the ladder?

When we climb up, we feel tired, but the mountain top fascinates us, we dream and we reach. Once we are at the top, we try to be there always, but life forces us to be just actors who need to return the costumes as soon as the play is over. So, we start walking down the valley from the hill, and we mourn. Time heals by just eating away everything on its path.

Change & Time shows its miracle on everything we touch. It diffuses into our blood at the time we are born. From then on, we change: physically, mentally, and spiritually!

We live; we die; does it make a difference to any? Is it necessary to make any difference to any?

Why should I live? Should I just live for myself or for others around me?

Thoughts provoke brain. Brain creates impulses. Impulses act on us and so we act. Action delivers results. Results deliver value. The value gets judged by nature and so you.

Do we have a value? Are we to decide? Are others authentic to decide? Who else has the right to decide?

Do we care what they decide? Should we care?

Life is to live.
Life is till the death.
So just live life.

Still the question remains, Why life?

I woke up. I woke up when my awakening call rang, against the forces of sleepiness. I shove away the idleness (my belonging) and began to open my eyes.

I could see the light. The light whispered to me, ‘Be with me and stop cursing the darkness’.

Darkness shattered all my hopes and it built a lonely exile. Now, light pierced into me, inch by inch. Crackling, groaning, weeping. The womb of infinite quenched the shunned.

I wiped the tears off. I should dream. I should seek an echo. I started the voyage.

A new year, 2008!

- And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
- And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
